What is safe to put down the drain?

March 20, 2017

People often ask me about this. I understand how temping it can be to buy a giant bottle with horrible smelling chemicials to pour down the drain in hopes that it will solve a drain problem for a while. But the truth is those nasty chemicals can literally eat holes in some older drainage systems. Not the best of news to hear when you have a house full of dinner guests for Thanksgiving weekend. But there are several things you can do to prevent your drains to becoming slow in the first place.

The first thing you can do is check the condition of your garbage disposal. An old rusty disposal can cause your dinner scraps to be forced down the drain without making them small enough to make it through. Secondly bathroom sink and tubs drains should have a stopper, strainer or screen that helps anything besides water to enter the drain. Often times I find that they are missing, broken or not installed properly. But the best thing that you can do not prevent an unexpected drain surprise is to have a plumber inspect your sewer system with a camera. Homeowners that do this will be able to address any restrictions while they are small and before they cause an emergency sewer back up.
